The pixel-to-inches formula

Divide the pixel width by the target DPI to get width in inches. Do the same with height. For centimeters, multiply the inch result by 2.54. This calculation describes how densely the available pixels will be printed.

Example: 4500 pixels divided by 300 DPI equals 15 inches. 5400 divided by 300 equals 18 inches. The file therefore supports a 15 × 18 inch mathematical print size at 300 DPI.

  • Width in inches = pixel width ÷ DPI
  • Height in inches = pixel height ÷ DPI
  • Centimeters = inches × 2.54

One file can have several print-size descriptions

A 3000 × 3000 px image is 10 × 10 inches at 300 DPI, 15 × 15 inches at 200 DPI and 20 × 20 inches at 150 DPI. No pixels are added or removed in those calculations. The tradeoff is the pixel density placed into each physical inch.

Whether a lower density looks acceptable depends on the source, print process, material and viewing distance. That is why a universal DPI claim is less useful than the provider’s current specification for the exact product.

Why changing the DPI field may do nothing

Many image editors let you change a resolution field without resampling. That only changes the intended physical-size metadata. A 1500 × 1500 px file remains 1500 × 1500 px whether the field says 72, 150 or 300 DPI.

Resampling is different: the software creates or removes pixels. Upscaling can make a file larger, but it cannot recover every detail that was absent from a small or blurry source. Inspect edges and lettering after any upscale.

Choose a canvas from the final product backward

Start with the current provider template. Note the required pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, safe area and accepted format. Build or resize the artwork to those values before creating final mockups and listing images.

If you sell the same artwork on several products, keep a high-quality master and export product-specific versions. A square sticker file, tall shirt print and wide mug wrap should not be forced from one flattened canvas without checking composition.

Resolution is necessary, but it is not the whole quality check

A file can have enough pixels and still print poorly because the source was compressed, blurred or artificially enlarged. Fine lines can disappear, low-contrast colors can merge and tiny lettering can become unreadable.

Inspect at 100% zoom, then preview at the intended physical scale. Check the actual exported file and keep important elements inside the template’s safe area.

  • Correct dimensions and aspect ratio
  • Sharp source detail rather than repeated upscaling
  • Readable type and sufficient contrast
  • No transparent or stray pixels outside the intended artwork

A repeatable POD size workflow

Record the product template, calculate the physical size, create the artwork at or above the required pixel dimensions and inspect the export. If the source is too small, rebuilding or regenerating at a larger size can be safer than repeatedly stretching a finished image.
