What does 300 DPI mean for print-on-demand?
DPI means dots per inch in a physical print process. Image files are made from pixels, so design tools often use DPI or PPI to describe how those pixels map to inches. In a practical POD calculation, a 3000 px edge printed at 300 DPI measures 10 inches.
A 300 DPI target is common because it provides dense source information for detailed artwork viewed up close. It is not a universal guarantee. Fabric, ink, print method, viewing distance and the provider’s production system all affect the final result.

Why changing 72 DPI to 300 DPI does not add print detail
A DPI field can be metadata: an instruction that tells software how large to place the existing pixels on a physical page. If you change a 1500 × 1500 px file from 72 DPI to 300 DPI without resampling, it remains 1500 × 1500 pixels. At 300 DPI, those pixels describe a 5 × 5 inch print.
Resampling is different because it creates or removes pixels. An upscale can give software a larger canvas to work with, but it cannot perfectly recover lettering, linework or texture that was never present in the source.
How to check whether an image is large enough for 300 DPI
Start with the actual pixel width and height of the exported file, not the size of the editor window or a marketplace preview. Divide both dimensions by 300, then compare the resulting inches with the intended print area.
For example, a 2400 × 3000 px file supports an 8 × 10 inch mathematical size at 300 DPI. If you place it at 16 × 20 inches, the effective density becomes 150 DPI because the same pixels are spread across twice the width and height.

When should you upscale artwork for printing?
Upscaling is useful when the composition is strong but the file is moderately below the required pixel dimensions. It can improve edge continuity and reduce visible pixelation, especially for bold shapes, clean illustrations and uncomplicated textures.
Upscaling is not a repair for every source. Rebuild or regenerate the artwork when small text is unreadable, important edges are already blurred, compression blocks are visible or the source would need several rounds of enlargement. After any upscale, check the result at 100% zoom and compare it with the original before export.
A repeatable 300 DPI workflow for POD artwork
Work backward from the product instead of applying 300 DPI at the final export and hoping the file is large enough. Keep an editable master, produce a separate version for each product shape and reopen the exact exported asset for the final inspection.

Does every POD file need to be exactly 300 DPI?
No single DPI value applies to every POD product. Some providers specify exact pixel dimensions, some recommend a density range and some process the uploaded file for a particular printing method. A large poster viewed from farther away may tolerate a lower effective density than small type on a garment.
Use 300 DPI as a strong planning target when it matches the provider guidance, but do not override an official template or reject a suitable file only because one metadata field displays another number. Pixel dimensions, physical size and source quality have to be evaluated together.
